The first half of the film appears to be an absurd comedy, but beneath the black humor it deeply reflects the anti-war sentiments of people in the later stages of the war. The second half of the film is incredibly moving and can be described as profoundly shocking; the two instances of the palm tree, a symbol of confinement, being thrown into the sea symbolize the overturning of power and the yearning for freedom.
