The film is based on the most infamous murder mystery in New York's history. In 1973, Robert Durst (played by Ryan Gosling), the son of a New York real estate tycoon, married the beautiful poor student Kathleen McCormack (played by Kirsten Dunst). After their marriage, they left the city to enjoy a period of tranquility in the countryside, but when they returned, Kathleen went back to school to continue her studies. Everything seemed happy, but in 1982, Kathleen suddenly disappeared without a trace. In 2000, Durst's friend Susan Berman was found dead in her home, reigniting the disappeared case from 20 years earlier. Durst was questioned about these two cases, but he was not charged due to lack of evidence. In 2001, Durst's neighbor Morris Black was murdered, and the body was dismembered, leading to renewed suspicion and charges against him. However, after being defended by a famous lawyer, he was acquitted. It wasn't until 2004 that Durst was finally sentenced to five years in prison; the media gave him the title of "millionaire murderer."
