Dragline, much larger than Lucas, dominates him in a fight, but Lucas refuses to submit, earning Dragline's respect. In prison poker games, Lucas repeatedly wins, earning the nickname Cool Hand Luke. Visits from his mother and nephew inspire him, and despite enduring many harsh conditions and inhumane treatment in prison, he remains hopeful for the future. However, the death of his mother plunges him into deep despair. He desires to escape more than ever, but repeated failures and the warden's cruelty make his path increasingly difficult... The film won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
