In Shinano, there is a Narayama, where the villagers need to go when they turn seventy. Ara Reiko (played by Sumiko Sakamoto), a 69-year-old woman from the Tsutsuki family, has three unresolved matters: first, her 45-year-old eldest son Takahe (played by Ken Ogata) became a widower last year; second, her 20-year-old grandson Kiyosuke (played by Seiji Kurazaki) always mocks her sturdy teeth in front of the villagers; third, her 35-year-old second son Risuke (played by Heita Saton) has never had sexual relations with a woman. On the annual festival day, reiko resolutely knocked out two of her front teeth on a stone mortar after the arrival of her new daughter-in-law Ayumi (played by Akira Takeguchi). During the rice harvesting season, Kiyosuke brought Asumatsu (played by Junko Takada) from the Amaya family into the Tsutsuki household, but Asumatsu ended up stealing grain from the Tsutsuki family to transport back to the Amaya family. Takahe caught Asumatsu, but did not make it public; he just privately taught him a lesson. However, the Amaya family had a long history of theft which ultimately incited the villagers' anger. Not only did the villagers raid the Amaya family, but to prevent any future troubles, they buried the entire Amaya family alive, including Asumatsu. Reiko is determined to go to Narayama in winter, but who should she entrust with Risuke's matter...?
