The life of Puyi (played by John Lone) is recounted in the film. He ascended to the throne at the age of three, and in his young eyes, all he could see was a grasshopper on the minister's body; the nation was merely an incomprehensible term to him. As he grew up, he thought he could bring reform, but the eunuchs burned the court's account books in a fit of rage. He believed he was the master of the Qing dynasty, only to become a puppet of the Japanese. After liberation, he boarded a train returning from the Soviet Union, surrounded by the People's Liberation Army guarding him. He suspected he could not escape death, so he hid in a small bathroom to cut his wrists and commit suicide. However, he did not die on the train; fate's mockery was still waiting for him. The winds and rains of the Cultural Revolution left him with many scars.
