Sophia (Alicia Vikander) lost her parents in childhood and became an orphan. As an adult, she encounters the wealthy businessman Cornelius (Christoph Waltz), who is much older than her. Although Cornelius can easily buy anything in the world with money, he regrets not being able to have his own children. Therefore, after marrying Sophia, his greatest wish is for her to bear a boy who can inherit the family fortune. Cornelius invites the painter Jane (Dane DeHaan) to create portraits of the couple, during which Sophia becomes captivated by Jane's talent and falls deeply in love with him. Soon, Sophia discovers that she is unable to conceive, which means the only outcome for her in this marriage is abandonment.
