In a certain apartment in Tokyo, there live two sisters, Nobuko Kasahara (played by Eiko Koike) and Shoko Kasahara (played by Keiko Kitagawa), whose parents have both passed away. Nobuko works at a newspaper and fully supports her younger sister, who has just entered society. One day, Nobuko goes on a trip to the northeast, only to never return. Shocked and saddened, Shoko discovers that her sister’s death did not occur at her intended destination. At this moment, Nobuko’s colleague Ryoichi Yoshibi (played by Osamu Mukai) visits, expressing some of his own doubts to Shoko, and thus they begin to investigate together. Shortly after, Shoko takes her sister’s position at the newspaper, during which a woman named Tomie Machida (played by Wakana Sakai) commits suicide, leaving clues regarding Nobuko’s death to Shoko. More and more mysteries compel Shoko to delve deeper into the dark abyss... This film is adapted from the original work by the famous Japanese mystery writer Seicho Matsumoto.
