An American woman interviewing in Nicaragua is trapped in a hot, rainy city where soldiers frequently patrol the streets amidst turbulent political conspiracies. Strapped for cash, she resorts to exchanging her body for money. After encountering a mysterious British man, a transaction leads to a passion that swells like a tidal wave, ensnaring her in an inescapable web of desire. She initially believes he could be her lifeboat, only to find herself plunging into greater danger. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Denis Johnson, Claire Denis sets the backdrop during the pandemic, portraying fugitive lovers finding solace in a closed-off country, reflecting a keen sensitivity to the times and creating an emotionally charged masterpiece.
