In the late Edo period, there had been no war for 250 years. Poor samurai, some chose to leave their domains and become wandering samurai or ronin. Tsuzuki Moku no Shin (played by Sōsuke Ikematsu) is one such wandering samurai. He arrives at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Edo, helping with work in exchange for food. To prevent his swordsmanship from becoming rusty, he practices diligently every day and also uses a wooden sword to teach the farmer's son, Ichisuke (played by Takakazu Maeda), the art of the sword. Ichisuke's sister, Koyuu (played by Yu Aoi), looks at their daily obsession with swordsmanship with cold eyes, yet feelings begin to grow between her and Moku no Shin. During this time, Japan faces pressure from foreign black ships demanding the shogunate end its isolationist policy, and the long period of peace begins to unravel. Koyuu's greatest fear is that Moku no Shin will go to the center to participate in the turmoil, which signals that the days when she and her brother may lose their lives are drawing closer.
