"Marwencol" is based on the 2010 documentary of the same name, telling the true story of Mark Hogancamp. This man fell into a nine-day coma after being brutally beaten by five teenagers and woke up with no memory, unable to remember his life, friends, or family. As a special form of therapy, Mark Hogancamp began creating a World War II Belgian town in his backyard using 1:6 scale figurines, which he called "Marwencol," representing himself, friends, and those who attacked him with dolls. "Marwencol" partially repaired Mark Hogancamp's mind while allowing him to create a fantastical world, which was also shown to more people through the documentary by Jeff Malmberg released in 2010.
