Focuses on the events of 1925 when sled dog drivers and their sled dogs worked together to save the lives of children in Nome, Alaska, during a serum relay known as the "Great Race of Mercy." At the end of 1924, a 2-year-old child in Nome fell ill, and doctors diagnosed him with tonsillitis, which typically isn't life-threatening. However, this child became an exception, and soon many children were diagnosed with tonsillitis, with several unfortunately passing away. Doctors ultimately confirmed the illness as diphtheria. At that time, a vaccine was available to combat diphtheria, but all vaccines in Nome had expired, and the new vaccines failed to arrive before the port closed. The Baltic Sea would not thaw until June of the following year, and there were no roads or airplanes leading to Nome; the only transportation route was the mail route, which could only be traveled by sled dogs in winter. The health department decided to use two teams of sled dogs for a relay transport, requiring 20 sled dog drivers and 150 sled dogs to work day and night, traversing rivers, plains, forests, and the frozen Alaskan mail route. The nearest vaccine location was in Nulato, 1,085 kilometers from Nome. Under normal circumstances, dog sledding would take 25 days, but they successfully completed the relay in just 5 and a half days, saving many children's lives. The main character, Togo, is one of the lead dogs used by Norwegian sled dog driver Leonhard Seppala (played by Willem Dafoe), who is praised for his intelligence, exceptional leadership, and keen intuition. Seppala was tasked with delivering the most dangerous leg of the relay, from Nome to Nulato to receive the shipment of serum, which he completed successfully in temperatures of minus 30 degrees and winds above level seven. Later, Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen awarded Togo a gold medal. Bjorn plays a relay team member who betrays Seppala along the way.
