This is a broken family; the alcoholic coach father, Paddy (Nick Nolte), abuses his wife, and the second son, Tommy (Tom Hardy), leaves with his mother who can no longer bear it. The eldest son, Brendan (Joel Edgerton), chooses to stay for love, believing he can gain his father's favor and support, but in the end, father and son part ways.
