Alvin (Tom Holland) is born into a very devout Christian family. His father, Willard (Bill Skarsgård), although silent and strict, loves his child very much. From a young age, Willard teaches Alvin to reveal all his inner thoughts to Jesus. Although Willard devoted his life to the Lord, the Lord did not treat him well. Willard's wife suffers from an incurable disease, and despite Willard's fervent prayers, she eventually passes away. In his shattered faith, Willard chooses suicide, leaving Alvin an orphan, taken in by his grandmother's family. While living with his grandmother, Alvin meets Renata (Eliza Scanlen), another orphan. Although they are not blood-related, they are as close as siblings. Renata is also a devout believer, and a new pastor named Preston (Robert Pattinson) arrives in town. Though he is handsome, he is a monster in disguise. Preston exploits Renata's faith and reaches out with his sinister intentions.
