Jack (played by Edward Norton) is an employee at a large car company, suffering from severe insomnia and filled with crisis and hatred towards everything around him. One day, Jack meets Tyler (played by Brad Pitt), a rebellious, cruel, and violent anti-hero who sells soap, and ends up moving into Tyler's dilapidated home after a fire destroys his apartment. The two become good friends serendipitously and establish the "Fight Club": an underground organization where people engage in bare-knuckle fighting without protective gear to vent their emotions. The club attracts more and more people, gradually evolving into a nationwide underground organization, with Tyler captivating a group of blind followers with his personal charisma. The members of the club engage in fights and rampant destruction, while Tyler's actions become increasingly erratic. Jack becomes increasingly intolerant of the state of the "Fight Club" and Tyler's behavior, leading to a confrontation that causes Tyler to leave him. However, Jack realizes that he cannot escape Tyler's shadow wherever he goes, prompting him to contemplate: Who am I really?
