Stanton (Bradley Cooper) is a down-and-out man who inadvertently arrives at a traveling circus, where he cleverly secures a job working for tarot card reader Zena (Toni Collette) and her lover Pete (David Strathairn). From these two, Stanton learns how to wield what appears to be "magic" in the eyes of the audience through smooth talk and keen observation. Meanwhile, Stanton also encounters a girl named Molly (Rooney Mara) at the circus, and over time, feelings develop between them. Eventually, Stanton leaves the circus with Molly, believing that they can carve out a space of their own with their own hands. Years pass, and although Stanton has gained some fame in the fortune-telling circuit, he is not satisfied and yearns for more money. At this point, a woman named Lilith (Cate Blanchett) appears before him.
