Like most families, the Jarrett family leads a stable and peaceful life. Calvin (Donald Sutherland) is not only a diligent and upright lawyer but also excels in his roles as a father and husband. He has been happily married to his wife Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) for over twenty years, and their relationship is particularly stable. Being the eldest son of the Jarrett family, Buck (Scott Doebler) enjoys more care and love, while his younger brother Conrad (Timothy Hutton) seemingly does not mind this difference. During an unfortunate incident, Buck drowns, leaving a devastated Beth to blame Conrad, who was with Buck at the time. This accusation deeply pains and tortures Conrad. Fortunately, with Calvin’s companionship and concern, the wounds in his heart gradually heal. However, when he musters the courage to seek warmth from his mother again, Beth's actions plunge his heart back into ice.
