Young Elliot (Henry Thomas) discovers a small alien unexpectedly lost on Earth. He secretly takes the small alien in and introduces him to his brother and sister. The children get along friendly with the alien, sharing chocolate, taking him to the countryside to look for traces left by his family, and are excited by the alien's various special abilities. Gradually, a wonderful bond forms between Elliot and the alien, transcending the barriers of verbal communication. However, soon the existence of the alien is discovered by the adults, and a relentless manhunt begins. E.T. is captured and taken to a lab, leaving young Elliot gravely ill. The children become angry and spontaneously organize a rescue mission for the alien. Elliot also awakens and joins the rescue effort, inspired by a spiritual calling. Will they succeed?
