13-year-old girl Mei (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) grows up in a typical Asian family, where her home is a family shrine opened to tourists, honoring her ancestors. Mei's mother (Sandra Oh) is a caring yet slightly neurotic woman. In front of her mother, Mei always plays the role of a good girl, but in reality, she is just like all her peers—mischievous, active, and starting to take an interest in boys. The best friends Mei has at school are Priya (voiced by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), Miriam (voiced by Ava Morse), and Abby (voiced by Hyein Park); the four of them are fans of the popular idol group 4*Town.
