Shrek lives in an ordinary world—he is an unattractive monster with a green body, a quirky temperament, and a lazy, untidy lifestyle. One day, a few unexpected guests arrive at his home, telling Shrek that they come from a kingdom ruled by a cruel king and are now homeless. Moreover, that cruel king has kidnapped an extraordinarily beautiful princess, planning to take her as his wife. Although Shrek is ugly, he has a kind heart. Under the threat from the lord, he reluctantly sets off to rescue the princess, while also hoping to catch a glimpse of her beauty. On the way, he encounters a chatty donkey, who, upon learning about Shrek's story, decides to loyally serve him.
