The story begins with the demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) who lives with the wind and sea. He steals the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, causing the lava monster Te Ka to go berserk, threatening the destruction of the islands in the South Pacific. A thousand years later, on one of the islands, the chief's daughter Moana (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) grows up under her parents' care. In her childhood, she once found the heart of Te Fiti and felt the call of the sea; however, her father strictly forbids her from going out to sea, even as their island faces the threat of death. From her grandmother, Moana learns the history of her people, and in order to save the island, she sets out to find the trapped Maui, hoping he will return the heart of Te Fiti. After enduring numerous hardships, Moana finally meets the legendary, arrogant demigod. However, Maui refuses to go, fearing the heart of Te Fiti will bring bad luck. Nevertheless, guided by fate, Maui follows Moana on an unknown journey...
