Unable to face the reality of her husband's suicide, Gilbert's (Johnny Depp) mother continuously overeats, leading her weight to balloon to six hundred pounds, making it difficult for her to move. Gilbert's mentally challenged brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) was diagnosed by doctors at birth to not live past the age of ten, yet he is about to celebrate his eighteenth birthday, while Gilbert's youngest sister Ellen is in the throes of a rebellious adolescence. The family's livelihood and Arnie's daily care have become Gilbert's entire life, with his sister being his only helping hand. A lively traveler, Becky (Juliette Lewis) passes through the small town and instantly falls in love with Gilbert, and the two quickly immerse themselves in sweet romance. Becky's passion for life gradually leads Gilbert to realize that besides his family, he should also pursue his own happiness. With Arnie about to turn eighteen, this is their mother's last wish; once this is all over, maybe Gilbert can have a different kind of sky.
