Louis (played by Robert Cummings) is a publisher who one day receives a confidential message that a very famous poet from the last century, along with his lover Julianna (played by Agnes Moorehead), is still alive and has preserved their correspondence. In order to obtain these letters, Louis adopts a pseudonym and disguises himself as a novelist, approaching and staying at Julianna's home as a guest. Julianna now lives with her niece Tina (played by Susan Hayward), who is very antagonistic towards Louis and targets him at every turn. The local priest also warns Louis to keep his distance from the family, or misfortune will follow. What secrets lie behind Julianna and Tina?
