On December 10, 1968, a suspect impersonating a police officer claimed that a cash transport vehicle was bombed and then escaped with a truck full of yen. Over the next 15 years, the Japanese police mobilized 120,000 personnel and three times the amount of the stolen money to pursue the culprit, but to no avail. Just after the statute of limitations for the case expired, the American insurance company that was to pay out $500,000 was furious and promptly dispatched its experienced claims manager, Hidetaka Takeda (played by Masakazu Tamura), to Japan to track down the suspect. With the help of investigators Ryoko Nakagawa (played by Kimiko Yo) and Kaoru Takahara (played by Yasunobu Danda) from an Asian investigation company, Takeda revisited the crime scene and interviewed relevant individuals, honing in on the troubled youth Kenji Hamano, who had committed suicide shortly after the incident by consuming cyanide. As the investigation progressed, numerous dark secrets blocked their path... This film is adapted from a novel by the renowned mystery writer Seicho Matsumoto, based on a true event.
