The story is set in Japan during the Edo period. Kaze is a maid at a small tea house, and one day a group of local bullies arrives, led by the particularly aggressive son of a local official, Ryūjirō. Kaze accidentally offends Ryūjirō, and in a desperate moment, a jobless ronin named "Muhuan" intervenes to save her. Meanwhile, the local official is oppressing the common people, and the wandering samurai "Jin" draws his sword to help when he witnesses injustice, killing four of the local official's bodyguards and saving the poor, thus incurring the official's wrath. Shortly after, Muhuan and Jin meet and engage in a fight at the tea house, but suddenly a massive fire traps them, leading to their capture. Angered by the death of his son in the fire, the local official orders the two to be executed. On the day of the execution, the two create a disturbance at the execution site and, with Kaze's help, manage to escape. As a price for her assistance, Kaze asks them to help find a samurai who "carries the scent of sunflowers." Thus, the three embark on a fantastical journey. "Chaos Samurai" is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, and the film showcases a unique blend of ukiyo-e and modern hip-hop styles. This anime was selected as a recommended work in the Animation category at the 2004 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Media Arts Festival in Japan.
