Tony (James Fox), who has just moved to London, hires a man named Barrett (Dirk Bogarde) as a servant, entrusting him with everything in the house. The clever and hardworking Barrett does not disappoint Tony and quickly gains his trust. Tony's girlfriend Susan (Wendy Craig) does not like Barrett, as she vaguely senses an ambiguous relationship between Tony and Barrett's sister, Vera (Sarah Miles). Later, Tony is shocked to discover that Vera is Barrett's lover, and feeling deceived, he dismisses Barrett. By coincidence, Tony and Barrett reunite in a small pub and reestablish their master-servant relationship, but this seemingly peaceful relationship is filled with underlying tension.
