Nikaido Haru (voiced by Daisuke Ono) is a solitary and delinquent boy who dislikes school. On his way to skip school, he encounters a mysterious man in black named Shirogane (voiced by Junichi Suwabe). Shirogane tells Haru that they have an inseparable bond and arranges to meet him at the school building at 10 PM. Haru treats this lightly, not knowing that this meeting will open up a new world of light and shadow before him. At the school building, Haru is attacked by a mysterious monster. Although he is saved by Shirogane, Haru loses his shadow forever. To maintain his sense of existence, Haru makes a contract with Shirogane, who becomes Haru's temporary shadow. Subsequently, they are continuously harassed by monsters known as "Kurochi," and Haru gets caught up in a battle for shadows.
