Directed by Akira Kurosawa and Hideo Oguni, adapted from Maxim Gorky's play of the same name. A craftsman, a night hawk, a candy seller, a playboy, an actor, a thief, a pilgrim, and many others living in a sunless tenement in Edo (now Tokyo) at the end of the Edo period intertwine with an unappealing landlord and his wife, forming a dry depiction of life. The film was made in a short time with a low budget, which was unusual for Kurosawa. Toho was tired of long production cycles and high production costs, leading Kurosawa to personally produce this movie. It is said that Kurosawa only built one outdoor set and one indoor set, rehearsed thoroughly, and filmed with several cameras simultaneously.
