Yuji Nimura (played by Jō Odagiri) and Mamoru Arita (played by Tadanobu Asano) are good friends, both working at the same factory. Mamoru keeps a red jellyfish as a pet, a shiny creature that is dangerously toxic. One day, their boss comes to the apartment and reaches out to play with the jellyfish, but Mamoru intentionally ignores Yuji's warning. The boss, injured by the jellyfish, becomes furious and fires Mamoru, who then vents his anger on Yuji. Mamoru is arrested and sent to prison, entrusting Yuji with the care of the jellyfish. Mamoru's father, Shinichirō (played by Ryuhei Matsuda), comes to visit him in jail, trying to rebuild his relationship with his son, even though they haven't seen each other for five years. However, Mamoru's sudden death plunges both his friends and father into grief, and the two men seek comfort in each other. One day, the jellyfish accidentally escapes, and Yuji begins to scatter food into the river daily to ensure the jellyfish survives.
