The main character, Ruko Kominato (voiced by Ai Kakuma), is an ordinary female middle school student who is shy and somewhat weak. She moves to a new city and starts at a new school, struggling with making friends. Her older brother, Shingo Kominato (voiced by Haruki Ishiya), notices her troubles and gives her a card called "WIXOSS," hoping she can gain friendships through the game. To Ruko's surprise, when she draws her main card, the "LRIG Card," the illustrated girl, Yuuna (voiced by Misaki Kuno), materializes into reality. Not only that, but Ruko's classmate, Yuzuki Kiryuu (voiced by Ayako Kawasumi), challenges her to a match.
