"Black Jack" was first published in Akita Shoten's "Weekly Shōnen Champion" on November 19, 1973, and continued serialization until September 1978. (After 1979, it was published as irregular standalone chapters.) This manga won the 4th Japan Cartoonists Association Award in 1975 and the Kodansha Manga Award in 1977. In mainland China, the simplified Chinese book rights were acquired by Huashan Literature and Art Publishing House in 2006, and all 30 volumes of the simplified edition were published. The work was first adapted into an OVA in 1992, a theatrical version was released in 1996, and it was adapted into a television anime starting in 2004. It has also been made into live-action dramas multiple times. Black Jack, whose real name is Kuroo Black, was left alone with his mother after his parents divorced when he was young. One day, while out with his mother, an accident caused by a construction worker led them to step on an unexploded bomb, resulting in an explosion. After his mother was sent to the hospital and passed away, he was severely injured and near death. Fortunately, Dr. Jotaro Honma's remarkable medical skills saved him.
