The first part of the movie version of "Neon Genesis Evangelion." It is divided into two segments: "DEATH" and "REBIRTH." The "DEATH" segment is a re-edited summary based on the content of episodes 1 to 24 of the original TV anime. The "REBIRTH" segment picks up from the content of episode 24: After the Seventeenth Angel is defeated, SEELE issues an order to NERV for Evangelion Unit-01 to carry out the "Human Instrumentality Project." However, Gendo Ikari disagrees with SEELE's actions and refuses to comply. SEELE deems this a form of betrayal and decides to completely eliminate NERV. At dawn, NERV headquarters is suddenly attacked by the Strategic Self-Defense Force, who carry out a brutal massacre of NERV personnel. To protect the pilot, Misato Katsuragi orders that the mentally broken Asuka be sent to Unit-02 and placed deep at the bottom of the lake, while she goes to rescue Shinji Ikari herself. At this moment, Shinji Ikari is already on the brink of mental collapse.
