Hugh (voiced by Daisuke Ono) comes from an aristocratic family. His grandfather, a book collector obsessed with rare books, left behind an ancient mansion and a house full of books after dying in an accident. The grandfather's will states that to inherit the mansion, one must also take on the Bookcase of Dantalian. After receiving the letter, Hugh visits the mansion and encounters a mysterious girl named Dalian (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro) amidst the stacks of books in the basement. To investigate his grandfather's cause of death, Hugh goes to Conrad's mansion and sees a terrifying scene caused by "phantom books." "Phantom books" are dreamlike books that should not exist. They contain powerful forbidden forces that can bestow endless blessings upon the reader but may also overturn the world and cause its collapse. The Bookcase of Dantalian is what seals these phantom books. Dalian instructs Hugh to take out the key and recite the incantation. The giant lock on her chest gleams with a metallic luster, revealing that the girl Dalian is the entrance to the Bookcase of Dantalian... This animation is adapted from the light novel of the same name by author Gakuto Mikumo.
