The story begins with high school girl Chiyo Sakura (voiced by Ari Ozawa) confessing her love to her crush, the tall and manly Umetarou Nozaki (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura), who is in the same grade as her. However, the outcome of her confession is receiving his autograph instead. Just as Chiyo is frustrated by the misunderstanding caused by her confession line "I'm your fan," Nozaki invites her to his home. Excited yet nervous, she finds herself surrounded by a pile of manga manuscripts and unintentionally becomes his manga assistant. Chiyo soon discovers that her crush, Nozaki, is actually a well-known shoujo manga artist. Although the works are renowned for portraying delicate female emotions, Nozaki is surprisingly thick-skinned and has no romantic experience. The characters in his manga are based on his friends, who are all quirky in their own contrasting ways... This anime is adapted from the four-panel manga created by Japanese manga artist Tsubaki Izumi.
