The film is set in a surreal world filled with shadows and dark colors, featuring two unnamed boys (voiced by Jinpachi Nezu) and a girl (voiced by Mako Hyoudou) as the main characters. The girl carries a mysterious egg with her and spends a lot of time collecting various bottles and crafts in a Gothic dead city. One day, a boy, carrying a cross-shaped weapon, arrives in this town accompanied by a mysterious machine. Meanwhile, the silhouette of a giant coelacanth appears above the town, and the townspeople come alive in groups to hunt these fish using long spears. Inside the girl’s cavernous bottles, which serve as a sanctuary, her collection is kept. After the girl falls asleep, the boy breaks the mysterious egg. The girl reacts with anger and follows the already departed boy. Ultimately, the girl drowns in a valley, and the bubbles she exhales transform into individual eggs. The film is a collaboration between Japanese director Mamoru Oshii and renowned illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, released by Tokuma Shoten in 1985 and reissued on DVD in 2007. The film’s narration is performed by Keiichi Noda.
