"After the Human Decline" is a Japanese light novel written by Romeo Tanaka and illustrated by Toru Yamazaki. It is one of the inaugural light novels of Gagaga Bunko, serialized since May 2007, and has maintained strong sales for four years. The story is set in a time long after the decline of humanity, where population drastically decreased due to an unknown reason leading to a severe drop in birth rates. The remnants of civilization are barely hanging on, and humanity is slowly withdrawing from the stage of history. In their place are mysterious beings resembling fairies that would only appear in fairy tales. These fairies are only about 10 centimeters tall, have a three-head-tall appearance, yet possess high intelligence and a great fondness for sweets. The protagonist, Mai Nakahara (voiced by Mai Nakahara), is a recent graduate and returns to her hometown, Camphor Village, to continue her grandfather's work as an important international civil servant known as a "Mediator," who facilitates relations between fairies and humans. However, due to the rarity of contact between fairies and humans, she has little work to do, and thus hopes to study the ecology of fairies in depth.
