The story is set in the 1930s, where an innocent young man named Bobby (played by Jesse Eisenberg) travels to Hollywood to seek out his successful uncle Phil (played by Steve Carell). Through Phil's introduction, Bobby meets a charming girl named Vonnie (played by Kristen Stewart). The lively and talkative Vonnie quickly makes Bobby fall in love, but unfortunately, she informs him that she already has a boyfriend. One day, heartbroken, Vonnie approaches Bobby, revealing that her boyfriend is a married man who has decided to break up with her after failing to make up his mind about divorcing his wife. Bobby patiently comforts the heartbroken Vonnie, and over time, they slowly grow closer. Unexpectedly for Bobby, Vonnie's ex-boyfriend turns out to be Phil, and when Phil decides he wants to marry Vonnie, she leaves Bobby without hesitation. Afterward, disheartened, Bobby returns to his hometown and works at a club run by his brother Ben (played by Corey Stoll), where he meets Veronica (played by Blake Lively). They get married and have children, and everything looks beautiful until one day, Vonnie and Phil unexpectedly reappear in Bobby's life.
