Once upon a time, mysterious beings known as Gauna invaded the solar system, causing humanity to become homeless, forced to wander through the vast universe aboard the giant spaceship Sidonia, which is as large as a planet. After a long thousand years, the residents of Sidonia have not encountered Gauna for a hundred years, yet they have never let down their guard, training generations of pilots to operate the humanoid weapons known as "Guardians." One day, a young man named Nagate Tanikaze (voiced by Ryota Oosaka), who lives underground, climbs to the surface out of hunger and is caught stealing rice. Under the orders of the captain (voiced by Sayaka Ohara), he becomes a trainee in the 628th class of Guardian pilots. There, he meets the kind girl Shizuka Hoshijiro (voiced by Aya Suzaki), the friendly intersex person Izana Shinatose (voiced by Aoi Tokumoto), and the proud and stubborn Norimune Kikodu (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai). Soon, the youths go out on a collection mission and unexpectedly encounter the long-unseen Gauna. The long-silent war in the cosmos begins once more… This film is adapted from the manga by Tsutomu Nihei.
