Denzel Washington plays a clever, gentle, kind, and brave South African leader of the black civil rights liberation movement, Steven Biko, who was killed by security police in prison in 1977. Kevin Kline portrays his white journalist friend Donald Woods, who risks his life to escape South Africa with his family in order to publicize the story of this freedom fighter, Biko. Denzel Washington received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this film.
