In the Heian Era city, humans, tanuki, and tengu coexist, turning the city's great wheels together. Shimogamo Yasaburo (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) is the third son of the prestigious Shimogamo family of tanuki. Despite being a tanuki, he can freely transform into a human. His mentor is the tengu Mr. Akatama. The aging Akatama has lost much of his once-great power and is in unrequited love with a beautiful human woman named Benzaiten (voiced by Mamiko Noto). Benzaiten is stunningly beautiful and free-spirited, and a member of Kyoto's secret organization, the "Friday Club." The head of the Shimogamo family, Soichiro, was highly revered by the tanuki clan but passed away several years ago, leaving the circumstances behind his death a mystery. He left behind four underachieving sons: the eldest, Shimogamo Yajiro (voiced by Junichi Suwabe), is strict and indecisive; the second son, Yajiro, is introverted and withdrawn; Yasaburo is only concerned with having fun; and the youngest, Yashirou, is timid as a mouse.
