The story takes place in Nantes, France, in 1955, during a vigorous workers' strike movement. One of the participants is steelworker Francis (played by Richard Berry). Francis rents a room from widow Margot (played by Danielle Darrieux). Although Margot is part of the bourgeois class, she shows great sympathy for the working class and often lends a helping hand. Francis has a long-term girlfriend, Valérie (played by Fabienne Guyon), who is already pregnant with his child. However, this cold and cruel man chooses to abandon her and turns his attention to a woman named Edith (played by Dominique Sanda). Edith is married to a wealthy businessman, but her married life is filled with suffering, and to cope with her inner frustrations, she secretly works as a prostitute.
