"Maverick" Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is the son of a legendary fighter pilot and is determined to become a hero like his father. The opportunity finally arrives as he is sent to the Top Gun training base with his officer "Goose" Nick Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) to undergo the most rigorous flight training. However, "Maverick's" training does not go as smoothly as he hoped, and his performance leaves much to be desired. His training partner, "Iceman" Tom Kazansky (Val Kilmer), also has his criticisms.
