The ordinary middle school student Madoka Kaname (voiced by Aoi Yuki) has a happy family and is a gentle and caring child in her daily life. The arrival of the transfer student Homura Akemi (voiced by Chiwa Saitou) disrupts Madoka's peaceful life; this cool, frail girl with long black hair seems to harbor an unspeakable secret about Madoka. A fateful encounter occurs when Madoka saves a strange, injured creature on the roadside, which unexpectedly can speak human language. It tells Madoka its name is Kyubey (voiced by Emi Nitta), and it makes a special request: it hopes Madoka will sign a contract to become a magical girl. Magical girls are a special existence in this world, tasked with fighting witches, and in return, Kyubey can grant them any one wish. During the battles, Madoka discovers that being a magical girl is not as wonderful as portrayed in stories, with constant possibilities of sacrifice. Furthermore, as the battles escalate, a brutal truth concerning herself is gradually surfacing.
