Transforming the enchanting eroticism in Kawabata's words, Yoshida Kijū uses sharp New Wave cinematography to outline the love and desire beneath the cold contours of the muse and his wife, Okada Mariko, against the light, turning into a mesmerizing and haunting entrapment. A married woman shoots nude photographs to comfort her lover, unintentionally falling into the hands of a stranger, from which a nightmarish journey begins. At the cliffs and sand dunes, the ambiguous space between the woman, her lover, and the stranger, reveals the captivating shadows of Antonioni; the act of copulation among the shipwreck remains resonates with Ingrid Bergman's "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1960). Breaking traditional Japanese perspectives, it releases female love and hate passions, with the lingering essence of Kawabata's literary imagery wandering in the solitary scenes as the train fades into the distance.
