Before 1890, the writer Chekhov (played by Nicolas Giraud) created mostly light works rich in comedy and satire. His pieces, known for their humor and clarity, were widely loved by the public. To honor the spiritual wealth he brought to the world, the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded him the "Pushkin Prize." In 1890, Chekhov traveled alone across mountains and rivers to Sakhalin Island, a former place of exile for political prisoners. The hellish scenes on Sakhalin deeply shook Chekhov's heart, and he began to realize that many people lived in suffering and poverty outside of his familiar world. From then on, Chekhov changed his writing style, using his journey to Sakhalin Island as material to expose the autocratic regime of Tsarist Russia.
