Setsuko (played by Tanaka Kuniko) and Mariko (played by Takamine Hideko) are sisters who share a close bond, living a life reliant on their father. Despite their vastly different personalities, the sisterly love between them has always been strong. As the years pass, Setsuko and Mariko grow into elegant young ladies. Eventually, Setsuko marries a man named Mitsumura, but the economic downturn causes Mitsumura to lose his job, leading him to spend his days at home drinking in despair. The weight of the family's responsibilities falls on Setsuko's shoulders.
One day, Setsuko's first love returns home after studying abroad and reconnects with her. The tedium and dissatisfaction in her marriage lead Setsuko to feel restless. Sensing Setsuko's feelings, the free-spirited Mariko encourages her sister to leave Mitsumura and find her own happiness. Just as Setsuko resolves to make a change, news of Mitsumura's death arrives.
