Writer Melvin (played by Jack Nicholson) is an eccentric, obsessive-compulsive old man with no family or friends, locked away in his house all day writing his 26th novel, living an extremely precise life, unable to tolerate even the slightest disturbance. Melvin's neighbor Simon (played by Greg Kinnear) is a young gay painter who has an adorable little dog, is lively by nature, and has a gentle demeanor, often subjected to Melvin's insults. Melvin only goes out once a day to the same restaurant, where the waitress Carol Connelly (played by Helen Hunt) is the only person willing and able to serve him. Divorced, Carol lives with her son Spencer, who suffers from severe asthma, which drives away many men interested in her. One day, Simon's home is robbed, and he is severely injured. Before going to the hospital, he entrusts Melvin with the care of his dog, and Melvin gradually grows fond of the little guy, experiencing changes in his psychology, starting to pay attention to the world around him, proactively helping others, and seriously examining his feelings for Carol...
