The new director Steven Soderbergh, who gained immediate fame with his debut film "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," unexpectedly chose a very obscure subject for his next work, depicting the struggles of impoverished life from the perspective of a child during the thirty years of economic collapse in America. The screenplay is adapted from the childhood memoirs of American writer A.E. Hotchner, featuring a protagonist who is an elementary school student. His father is a salesman, and his mother is sick and hospitalized for recovery, forcing his weak younger brother to be sent to live with relatives. He lives alone in a small motel, relying on the help of friends and his own resourcefulness to manage meals. The film does not have a complete narrative but the director reconstructs a unique era through vivid details and the vibrant performances of the actors. Child star Jesse Bradford is strikingly handsome and delivers an unexpectedly superb performance.
