Princess Hama Chiyo, the daughter of the favored concubine of Lord Kuroda, disguises herself as a boy to secretly inherit the crown prince's position. The abbot of the Bodhi Temple, Jizen, and the Black Shovel Ninja learn of this and send a secret letter to Edo. Bai Yitao (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama) is commissioned by the Kuroda clan to pursue the abbot and seize the secret letter. Along the way, Bai Yitao encounters Kuroda clan ninja Inazuma (played by Michiyo Yasuda), from whom he learns the secret behind the events. After successfully seizing the secret letter, a large number of assassins led by Yagyu Reido (played by Minoru Oki) are sent to kill him, but they all fall to Bai Yitao's hands. A high-ranking official of the Kuroda clan admonishes Lord Kuroda for using his daughter to succeed the crown prince, intending to kill her for treason. Entrusted by Inazuma, Bai Yitao thus becomes embroiled in this succession upheaval...
