In the 1930s during the Great Depression in America, the market is desolate. Housewife Cecilia (Mia Farrow) faces a dull job as a waitress by day (which she soon loses due to the economic collapse) and an uninspiring husband by night. As a fervent movie fan, she goes to the cinema daily to watch a film called "Cairo Violet," familiarizing herself with the lines and expressions to the point of memorization. In the film, there is no economic depression; instead, it depicts lavish parties and amusements of the upper class. One strange day, something extraordinary happens: the male lead, Tom (Jeff Daniels), steps out from the screen right in front of Cecilia and elopes with her. The characters in the movie start to discuss the situation, and the plot no longer follows the script, transforming into a discussion forum. Cecilia and Tom go to an amusement park, sharing their feelings. Although it starts off romantically, they soon realize that this won't fill their stomachs. The actor portraying Tom in real life, Gil (Jeff Daniels), also appears, competing with Tom for Cecilia’s affection. How will this absurd farce end? Going to the theater indeed allows one to temporarily forget the discomforts of the real world.
