The film is based on a true incident of police violence that took place in Paris's 18th district in 1993: a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old Zairean boy, Makomé M'Bowolé, during a patrol. In the film, a group of anti-government youths in the streets of Paris is frustrated after one of their own is severely beaten by police. Vins (played by Vincent Cassel) acquires a real gun and is determined to retaliate. Their hatred and anger are palpable, and a large-scale confrontation with the police is imminent. During the chaos, Vins is shot dead by the police, and his associates tremble as they aim their guns at the officers; the gunfire erupts... Whether police or street thugs, everyone loses control. The unrest and turmoil of youth are like an uncontrollable rage, with no one spared. Director Mathieu Kassovitz won the Best Director award at the 48th Cannes Film Festival (1995).
